The widow fiona6/9/2023 ![]() The worm of this book infected me long ago when, as a national newspaper journalist covering notorious crimes and trials, I found myself wondering what the wives of those accused really knew – or allowed themselves to know. ![]() I have been a journalist - senior writer at the Daily Mail, news editor at the Daily Telegraph, and chief reporter at The Mail on Sunday, where I won Reporter of the Year at the National Press Awards, gave up my job to volunteer in Sri Lanka and since 2008, have trained and worked with exiled and threatened journalists all over the world.īut through it all, a story was cooking in my head. My career has taken some surprising twists and turns over the years. ![]()

Dare I say it, I enjoyed this much more than the original, maybe because it enriches that initial reading experience so much. What if it sucked, like how Aciman bombed with Find Me? And did that perfect first book really need an add-on? Then I hit a patch of quite heavy reading and needed a bit of a break, so I decided to find out what Arthur had been up to in the interim. While I read the book well before it received this accolade, I put off reading the follow-up for as long as possible. When Andrew Sean Greer won the Pulitzer Prize for Less, it raised the eyebrows of literary pundits everywhere about the value and craft of comedy writing. You could say, at least, that Less is lost. You could say he is having the time of his life. Arthur Less might perish by coyote, or from thirst, or from exposure to the elements he might even face the blunt barrel of a pistol and escape with the joy of knowing he has stolen another day from Death and sleep well. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book encourages children to think about what consent means to them, and about the importance of personal boundaries - both knowing your own, and respecting other people's. It explains how consent plays a part in almost every interaction or relationship we have, and how it affects almost every area of life, from healthcare to the law. What is Consent? explores how consent works, and why it matters. Have you ever said 'yes' to something when, really, you wanted to say 'no'? Or have you ever tried to convince someone to do something they don't want to? Often, though, it isn't that black and white. ![]() What is consent? Why does it matter? How does it affect our daily lives? Why is it such a grey area, sometimes? The concept of consent is easy to oversimplify - yes means yes, and no means no. ![]() ![]() Loveboat book6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() As she learns the ropes of Loveboat, she encounters plenty of obstacles, and her understanding of her own identity begins to develop. Our first female finisher was Nancy (Barnaby's sister- they're a speedy family!) in a time of 9mins 20 secs. There was a great sprint to the line between our third and fourth finishers and Nate just managed to overtake Joseph. This week our first finisher was Corey again, with a time of 7mins 41 secs. She's right in the middle of this weeks start line picture: We had a visitor from Perth, Australia today. ![]() When he is running he always has seems to have a smile on his face too. ![]() He is super speedy and he has been our first finisher at 7 of those 8 runs! We love seeing Corey running across the park making it look easy with his very relaxed running style. ![]() The second was for Corey who completed 8 of his 11 junior parkruns at Long Eaton. Both were for completing 11 junior parkruns which is the distance of a half marathon. The first was for Adam who has completed every single junior parkrun we've had at Long Eaton! That is pretty special- well done, Adam. The run brief was pretty special today because it included two wristband presentations. The grey, drizzly weather was cheered up by the sight of all those bright coloured running clothes and happy faces. It was a nice surprise to see 36 juniors joining us for a post Christmas run. We thought the children might all be too exhausted from late nights over Christmas and too much chocolate. This morning we wondered whether anyone would join us to run. ![]() While Snowbound by Anna J. In this little town, to be that poor, there were constant moments of humiliation for him, and insecurity. There was often no food in the house, and neighbors had to bring covered dishes with food. And as a result, for the rest of his boyhood, Lyndon lived in a home that they were literally afraid every month that the bank might take away. He once had been a very respected state legislator and businessman, and he totally failed. On Johnson's personal connection with poverty He put everything into that speech because it was something he believed in so deeply. The senators and representatives sitting below him as he was making the speech were suddenly looking into a face they knew from his time in Congress, the face of a Lyndon Johnson who was determined to win. He had a very tough face, and sometimes his eyes narrow and his lips get into a very thin, grim line, and they're sort of pulled down on the corners so they almost seem like a snarl. On Johnson's face as he delivered the State of the Union speech ![]() |
